More and more automobile manufacturers recognize the potential of e-mobility and are offering electric vehicle models. At the same time, some are setting up new manufacturing sites for battery production. Installers too are expanding their business activities and making the transition to automobile sales. For example, solar technology suppliers are cooperating with manufacturers to offer electric vehicles for sale or lease. On the whole, the selection of suitable electric vehicles – including for commercial use – is becoming ever greater.
In the coming years, beginning in 2022, the first PV systems will reach the end of the 20‑year period of feed-in tariffs paid under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). This imminent development is another driving force behind the combination of PV and e-mobility. If everything runs according to the German government’s plan, 6 million electric vehicles will be on German roads by 2030. Market researchers at Navigant Research anticipate this magnitude of sales on the global market within the next seven years. The figures show that e‑mobility is becoming a growth market. This benefits a huge number of companies, as it involves more than just exchanging the drive components.
In the same way as the smartphone raised the world of communication to a whole new level, e‑mobility and renewable energies can propel a fundamental transformation in the energy industry: the convergence of environmentally friendly power generation and transportation. E‑mobility thus presents photovoltaic companies with an additional area of business, and these companies are increasingly offering power charging stations and smart home solutions. Power suppliers and municipal utilities are also connecting their green power supply with e-mobility services.
E-mobility only makes ecological and economic sense if it is fueled by renewable sources of energy. In Germany, for example, the Federal Environmental Agency has said that transportation must be greenhouse gas-neutral by 2050 if the country wants to achieve its climate goals. The environmental agency has also calculated that e-mobility generates lower additional economic costs for the energy transition in the transport sector than power-to-liquid, power-to-methane and power-to-hydrogen.
