Benchmark Installation from Wärtsilä on Offshore Construction Vessel

Technology group Wärtsilä is working on a new solution to enable fuel and emission savings of up to 50 percent for shipping. An offshore construction vessel was equipped with a benchmark installation of three energy storage systems and enables energy and load sharing capability. The system combines the diesel-electric configuration with the three batteries.

“This is a forward looking solution that offers both cost and environmental benefits, including less maintenance, reduced fuel consumption, and fewer exhaust emissions. In addition, it promotes more efficient and safer operations for the ship. We are confident that the positive impact of this solution will eventually be felt throughout the industry,” says Sindre Utne, General Manager, Wärtsilä Project Centre, Norway.

As early as 2018, the first phase on board of the North Sea Shipping AS, one of the world's largest and most advanced subsea construction vessels, was launched. Now, in the second phase, Wärtsilä has put an electronic bus connection and a newly developed module into operation that enables the ship to optimally distribute load and energy between the three Wärtsilä energy storage systems.
