New Extreme E Team Founded by Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton

Industry News – Wednesday, September 09, 2020

The race team is named after Hamilton’s racing number X44 and will partake in its first race in Season 1 of the Extreme E Championship, starting in early 2021. The series wants to raise awareness for environmental issues, thus having races in remote locations in the arctic, the desert, the rainforest, in glacial and coastal regions that are already damaged or threatened by climate change.

“Extreme E is an exciting new sustainability initiative, and this is a great opportunity to be involved from the outset as a team founder. Of course, my ambitions and commitments with Mercedes in Formula One mean that I won’t be operationally involved in X44, but I’m excited to play a different role in this new series, one that brings my vision for a more sustainable and equal world to life,” says X44 founder Lewis Hamilton.

Additionally, the races aim for minimal environmental impact, with live TV broadcasting instead of travelling spectators on-site and innovative impact on the development of electric vehicles. The X44 racing team as well as their competitors drive an E-SUV manufactured by Spark Racing Technology. The batteries are produced by Williams Advanced Engineering.
