Power2Drive Europe 2022: Renewable Charging Instead of Fossil Fuel - Intelligent Charging Solutions for E-Cars Combine Energy System and Mobility Transformation

Press Release – Thursday, April 7, 2022

Munich/Pforzheim, April 7, 2022. A car becomes a mobile power bank when it feeds power back into the grid as needed. Bidirectional charging turns the charging infrastructure into an interface between the transport and mobility and energy sectors. Power2Drive Europe will present Europe's largest range of mobility solutions in the field of renewable energies at Messe München from May 11 to 13, 2022. At the international exhibition, in the exhibition forum and at the accompanying Power2Drive Europe Conference, manufacturers, suppliers, installers, fleet and energy managers, dealers and start-ups will make their business contacts and gather information on all aspects of smart charging solutions, electric vehicles and mobility services.

Flexible consumers and electricity storage systems are becoming increasingly important with the expansion of renewable energy. For example, battery electric vehicles, through smart charging management, receive clean juice, such as from photovoltaic installations, whenever surpluses are available. But vehicles with bidirectional charging capacity not only draw electrical energy, they can also feed it back into the grid if needed. In this way, electric car batteries can serve as energy storage units – and the car becomes a mobile power bank.

Vehicle2Grid technology (V2G) enables intelligent sector coupling and is an essential building block for the transformation of the energy system. Because e-cars offer huge potential in terms of hitherto unused storage capacity: V2G technology can help decarbonize the transportation sector, keep the power grid stable, improve the integration of renewable energy and create additional revenue streams for energy suppliers and car owners. Such bidirectional charging significantly increases the importance of the charging infrastructure at the interface between the transport and mobility and energy sectors.

Expansion of publicly accessible charging stations in Europe

Leading the way is the Netherlands, where the number of publicly accessible charging points has grown by almost a third year-on-year to 91,739 in 2021. With an increase of 40%, the expansion in Germany (to 62,711 charging points) is also going strong. This is followed by France (54,653) and Italy (26,860), two nations with the strongest percentage growth of over 75% among the top 5 countries in the European Union. EU-wide, the number of publicly available charging points has also increased by almost three quarters compared to the previous year to 338,191 charging points. The overwhelming share of over 90% are AC charging points.

Information on trends in charging solutions and e-mobility, the latest technologies and models, and also mobility services, will be available at the international exhibition Power2Drive Europe from May 11–13, 2022 at Messe München.

Product innovation at the exhibition: E-mobility meets energy

The stakeholders of the energy system and mobility transformation will meet at the Power2Drive Forum in Hall B6: Manufacturers, distributors, start-ups and professional users share know-how for the transport and mobility sector in the context of renewable energies. Whereas some are only starting to realize the importance of “freedom energies”, the international renewable energies and e-mobility industry has been developing market-ready products and solutions for years.

The international exhibition reflects the intelligent integration of e-mobility into a renewable energy system in that it will take place as part of the innovation hub The smarter E Europe – at the same time as the energy exhibitions Intersolar Europe, ees Europe and EM-Power Europe.

Power2Drive Europe Conference: Rethinking mobility, focus on charging infrastructure

International experts, movers and shakers and thought leaders in the field of new mobility will meet at the accompanying specialist conference on May 10–11, 2022. The aim is to show the connection between e-mobility and issues such as green power, battery storage and sector coupling. They will present trends in charging technologies for e-mobility and best practice examples for mobile charging solutions and will discuss the connection between e-mobility and reducing the carbon footprint of the economy. A session will be dedicated to incentive programs for charging infrastructure across Europe, as well as regulatory hurdles. Conference attendees will also learn how energy suppliers can benefit from charge management and how the proliferation of electric vehicles will affect the power grid.

Thinking beyond industry boundaries: That is the strength of The smarter E Europe, Europe’s largest platform for the energy industry. A single conference ticket provides admission to four specialist conferences where you can gain an idea of how electricity, heat and transportation will be inter-connected in the future, and what role sector coupling will play in the supply of energy with renewable energy.

Exhibitors and visitors charge cars with green power

Throughout Power2Drive Europe 2022 and the parallel energy exhibitions Intersolar Europe, ees Europe and EM-Power Europe , exhibitors and visitors can charge their e-cars conveniently and at no cost – with green electricity from the solar roof of Messe München. Over 80 charging stations (Parking deck West, Messehaus) and one high-speed charging station (supercharger) are available in the west of the exhibition grounds. Power2Drive Europe will also provide a further 20 AC charging points for trade customers in parking lot P9 (at the east entrance to the exhibition grounds).
