Power2Drive Europe and cosmix expand the Market Overview Charging Systems

Press release – Wednesday, October 19, 2022

Munich/Pforzheim, October 19, 2022. To achieve their climate targets, Europe and Germany will have no choice but to expand electromobility and charging infrastructure. The market for public, commercial and private charging stations and wallboxes has become extremely complex, with more and more suppliers pushing new products into the market. Power2Drive Europe, the international exhibition for charging infrastructure and e-mobility, in cooperation with cosmix, Europe’s largest digital platform for charging infrastructure, has published the independent Market Overview Charging Systems to provide some orientation. The updated market overview presents over 260 products from 87 national and international manufacturers and is now available to download for free. On October 25, starting at 3 pm, the key findings from the new market overview will be presented in a Power2Drive Webinar .

By 2030, Europe intends to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent compared with those in 1990. This is the target set in the EU Commission’s 'Fit for 55 package' of guidelines and initiatives. For the transport sector, the Commission is mainly looking at e-cars, and the expansion of the charging infrastructure needed for e-mobility. The availability of charging points at home, at work or in public parking spaces is an essential factor for the potential growth of the market share of battery electric vehicles. This is why the German government wants to provide one million public charging points by 2030. According to the study “Ladeinfrastruktur nach 2025/2030 – Szenarien für den Markthochlauf” (Charging infrastructure after 2025/2030 – scenarios for the market ramp-up), published by the German National Centre for Charging Infrastructure , there will be demand for 440,000 to 843,000 charging points by 2030. The actual demand will depend on how much private infrastructure will be available and how much the public infrastructure will be used by then. Another influencing factor is the charging behavior of users. If drivers opt for charging hubs with fast charging points more often, this will reduce the required number of charging stations considerably.

Expansion of charging infrastructure must be accelerated

Whether the number of publicly accessible charging station needed in Germany in 2030 will be 440,000 or 843,000 – there certainly remains a lot of work to be done. After all, the number of publicly accessible charging stations registered in September 2022 as reported by the Federal Network Agency was a mere 68,275. Based on the number of 861,727 battery-electrical passenger cars, this makes eleven electric cars per publicly accessible charging station (September 2022, source: Federal Motor Transport Authority . Numbers by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory from 2021 show that the situation in most EU countries is similar: France had 37,128 charging points (15 e-cars per charging point), Spain 10,480 (9 e-cars per charging point) and Italy 23,543 (6 e-cars per charging point). The only country with an advanced infrastructure is the Netherlands, where 90,284 charging points were counted in 2021. Considering the country’s 252,689 electric passenger cars and vans, this means that there are 4 e-cars per charging point.

Updated and expanded Market Overview Charging Systems

The market for public, commercial and private charging stations and wallboxes has become extremely complex. Aspects such as plug & charge, load management and backend solutions mean that the sector is driven by hardware as well as software. When it comes to selecting hardware, you need to be mindful of the compatibility and integration capabilities of load management solutions as well as backend systems because of a growth in statutory requirements for charging solutions (e.g. conformity with calibration law, bidirectional charging etc.). Intelligent solutions with integrated software ensure that the charging station can be monitored and that charging costs can be settled automatically.

The Power2Drive Europe Market Overview Charging Systems, which was published together with cosmix, the digital platform for charging infrastructure, as well as the corresponding data provided by cosmix, helps planners, installers, project developers, operators and other market participants to keep an overview. The market overview offers an independent rundown of charging systems, listing over 260 products from 87 national and international manufacturers by categories, such as charging stations or wallboxes, and AC (normal charging stations) and DC (fast charging stations). Readers will find a selection of key technical data and will get answers to their questions, such as: Which plug, how much charging power, and how many recharging points are supported? Does the product feature intelligent charging management? How can the charging point or wallbox be integrated into building, energy or fleet management? The market overview is periodically updated and is available for free download in German, English, Italian, French and Spanish.

Power2Drive Europe 2023 – the leading exhibition

For even more information and orientation, visit Power2Drive from June 14–16, 2023 in Munich. The leading European exhibition for charging infrastructure and e-mobility is part of the innovation hub The smarter E Europe, which makes it the ideal meeting point for manufacturers, suppliers, installers, fleet and energy managers, distributors and start-ups. Under the motto “Charging the future of mobility”, the exhibition shines the spotlight on charging systems, electric vehicles and mobility services as well as innovative solutions and technologies for sustainable mobility. “More than 90 percent of exhibition space at Power2Drive Europe has already been booked. Many exhibitors are booking larger spaces. This will certainly be interesting for trade visitors”, says Markus Elsässer, CEO of exhibition organizer Solar Promotion GmbH. “We are adding more test drives with e-vehicles on the outdoor exhibition area while an e-mobility showroom will be showcasing the latest generation of electric vehicles available on European roads today”, adds Daniel Strowitzki, CEO of FWTM.

Power2Drive Europe 2023 will be held from June 14–16 as part of The smarter E Europe 2023 at Messe München.
