Dr Gauch is an energy technology analyst at the International Energy Agency in Paris. He is working across multiple transport topics such as electric vehicles, aviation and shipping as well as on technology innovation. For the IEA's latest Global Electric Vehicle Outlook 2026 he was the principal author on technology topics including vehicle-to-grid and autonomous vehicles. He has also contributed to the IEA's Energy Technology Perspectives, State of Energy Innovation and Global Hydrogen Review publications.
Before joining the IEA, he worked as a researcher at the University of Cambridge, where he developed tools for efficient early-stage building design and was a lecturer on transport decarbonisation. Hannes holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as well as a PhD from Imperial College London in Aeronautical Engineering.
