Electromobility in Italy: New Installation Record for Charging Points

Market Trend – October 30, 2023

With a new installation record of 47,228 charging points, Italy has impressively underpinned its status as one of the pioneers in electromobility. Lombardy tops the list, but the rapid growth in Campania is particularly noteworthy. This development is further supported by the progressive expansion of the highway infrastructure.

The impressive growth of charging stations illustrates the commitment of operators to provide the country with a strategic infrastructure. Italy has an opportunity here to establish itself as one of the most advanced countries in the field of electromobility, while at the same time strengthening its industrial leadership.

The focus now is on effectively using the new funding from the PNRR to create an advanced charging network that supports the planned growth of fully electric vehicles.

The expansion in the south and on the islands of Italy is particularly positive. There, 23% of total charging stations are already installed on the peninsula, while 56% are in the north and 21% in the center of the country. Campania stands out as the region with the greatest infrastructure growth, followed by Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna. However, while some regions have flourished, others face challenges, particularly due to new regulations that could slow expansion.

Fast charging along Italian highways

Another significant advance is the acceleration of the charging network along the highways. At the end of September, there were 851 charging points, an increase of 541 compared to the previous year. These charging stations are spread over almost a third of Italian rest areas.

Impressively, about 80% of the highway charging stations have a power greater than 43 kW and 59% greater than 150 kW. The first tenders foreseen by the regulation have already started, leading to hopeful prospects for the future.

Overall, the rapid development in the field of electromobility in Italy shows not only the willingness to innovate, but also the firm will to drive the green revolution in the transport sector. Italy could soon be regarded not only throughout Europe but also globally as a showcase country for electromobility and a state-of-the-art charging station infrastructure.
