After a break of several months, the German Federal Government is once again accepting applications for the electrification of bus fleets. Under the funding guideline for the “Promotion of alternative drive systems for buses in passenger transport,” which is valid until the end of 2025, transport companies and other bus operators can submit project outlines for the procurement or conversion of zero-emission buses until August 31, 2025. The actual approval of the subsidies will only take place after the budget law comes into force in fall 2025.
Battery and fuel cell buses (including overhead line and range extender systems) as well as conversions of conventional diesel buses are eligible for funding, provided that no suitable series solution is available. Charging, refueling, and maintenance facilities are also eligible for subsidies of up to 40% of eligible expenses. Increased subsidy rates apply to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A maximum of €15 million can be applied for per project.
With the new call for proposals, the ministry also aims to strengthen local public transport. Companies with a low e-bus quota will be given priority. Since the directive was launched in 2021, over €1.2 billion has been awarded to around 250 companies. Around 3,500 e-buses with battery or fuel cell drives have been subsidized.
